How to Connect a Printer to Wi-Fi
Get a printer onto your home Wi-Fi from its touchscreen, with the router's WPS button, or through the maker's phone app, then add it to your computer.
A printer on Wi-Fi can be used by every computer and phone in the house without a cable. Use whichever of the first three routes fits your printer, then add it on each device.
Use the printer's touchscreen
On the printer, open the wireless or network settings menu and choose the wireless setup wizard. The printer scans for nearby networks. Select your network name, type the Wi-Fi password on the screen keyboard, and confirm. The wireless light stops blinking and stays solid once the printer is connected.
Use the WPS button instead
This route suits printers without a screen. Press the WPS button on your router until its WPS light starts blinking. Within two minutes, press the WPS or wireless button on the printer (hold it for a few seconds on most models). The printer's wireless light turns solid when the connection is made. Skip this route if the router has no WPS button.
Use the maker's app instead
Install the app for your brand on a phone: HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel, or Brother Mobile Connect. Turn the printer on. A new printer, or one that has had its network settings reset, broadcasts a setup signal for a while after startup. Open the app, choose to add a printer, and follow the prompts. The app finds the printer, asks for your Wi-Fi password, and sends it to the printer.
Add the printer on your computer
On Windows 11 go to Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners, Add device, then click Add next to the printer. On a Mac go to System Settings, Printers & Scanners, Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, select the printer, and click Add. iPhones and iPads find AirPrint printers on the same network with no setup.
Print a test page
On Windows, click the printer in Printers & scanners and choose Print test page. On a Mac, print any document. If the page comes out, the printer is on the network and reachable.
If the printer cannot see your network. Many printers support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router broadcasts only on 5 GHz, enable the 2.4 GHz band (or a separate 2.4 GHz network name) in the router settings, then run the setup again.
If you need the printer's IP address. Print a network configuration page from the printer's network or reports menu. On screenless models, holding the wireless or information button for several seconds usually prints it. The page lists the IP address and the network the printer joined, which is what you need to add it manually on a computer.
