How to Fill a PDF Form That Will Not Let You Type

The form opens, but clicking a blank does nothing. Either the PDF is a scan or a flat file with no form fields, or it has fields and the browser viewer is not handling them. Both are fixed by opening the file in a real PDF app and adding text on top.

Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader

Download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader if you do not have it. Right-click the PDF, choose Open with, and pick Adobe Acrobat. Do not use the browser.

Use Fill & Sign

Click Fill & Sign in the toolbar or in the All tools panel. Real fields turn light blue and accept typing when clicked. For a flat form, click anywhere on the page. The Add text tool places a text box at that spot. Type the entry.

Adjust size and position

Use the small toolbar above the text box to make the text bigger or smaller with the A buttons, and drag the box to line it up with the blank. Repeat for each blank on the form.

Fill it on a Mac with Preview

Open the PDF in Preview, click the Show Markup Toolbar button, and click the Text tool. Drag the text box over the first blank and type. Click the Text Style button (the A) in the Markup toolbar to change the font and size. Repeat for each blank.

Save a copy

Choose File, Save As in Acrobat Reader, or File, Duplicate and then Save in Preview, and give the filled version a new name so the original stays blank.

If the fields exist but are locked. The sender restricted the form. Printing it with Microsoft Print to PDF or Save as PDF sometimes produces an unrestricted copy, but a form that blocks printing blocks that too. Ask the sender for a fillable or unrestricted version.

If you need checkmarks or a signature. Fill & Sign also has a checkmark, an X, a dot, and a Sign option that adds a typed or drawn signature. Browser viewers in Chrome and Edge can fill real fields but cannot add text to a flat form.
