How to Recover iPhone Photos After Recently Deleted Expires

Once a photo leaves Recently Deleted (30 days, sometimes up to 40), it is removed from iCloud as well, and neither the Photos app nor Apple Support can bring it back. Recovery now depends on finding another copy, so check these places in order.

Check Recently Deleted on iCloud.com

Sign in at icloud.com, open Photos, and click Recently Deleted in the sidebar. It uses the same window as the phone, but a photo deleted later than you remember may still be there. Select it and click Recover.

Look on devices that do not sync with iCloud Photos

A Mac, iPad, or old iPhone that has iCloud Photos turned off, or was signed out before the deletion, keeps its own copy. Open Photos on each one and search by date. On a Mac with a local Photos library, also check Time Machine, which can restore the library from a date before the deletion.

Restore from a computer backup

A Finder or iTunes backup made before the deletion contains the photos only if iCloud Photos was turned off at the time; with iCloud Photos on, those backups skip them. Restoring a backup replaces everything on the phone, so back up the phone first, or restore the old backup to a spare iPhone. In Finder, select the phone and click Restore Backup.

Check other cloud services

If Google Photos, OneDrive, Amazon Photos, or Dropbox camera upload was ever turned on, sign in to that service on the web and search by date. Check its trash or recycle bin too; each keeps deleted items for roughly 30 to 60 days.

Check shared albums, Messages, and people you sent it to

In the Photos app, scroll to Shared Albums and look in any album the photo was added to. In Messages, open the conversation, tap the name at the top, and scroll to Photos. Anyone you sent the photo to still has their copy and can send it back.

If nothing turns up. Apple has no server-side copy after the window ends, and support cannot restore it. Recovery tools that scan the phone rarely work on modern iPhones because storage is encrypted and freed space is reused quickly.

To avoid this next time. Keep a second copy outside iCloud, such as Google Photos backup or a regular import to a computer. Recently Deleted counts down per photo from its own deletion date, so check it when clearing space rather than waiting.
