How to Print an Email from Gmail

Printing from the browser menu gives you the sidebar, the toolbar, and half the message cut off at the margin. Gmail has its own print command that strips the interface away first, and it sits on the message rather than in the browser.

Open the message

Click the email in the list so the conversation is open on screen. Printing works on what is open, not on a message selected with a checkbox in the inbox.

Click the printer icon

The printer icon sits at the top right of the conversation, next to the three-dot menu. Click it. Gmail opens a new tab holding a clean print view, showing the sender, the date, the subject, and the message body on plain white, and the print dialog appears over it.

Choose a printer or save a PDF

Pick the printer in Destination. To keep a copy on the computer instead, choose Save as PDF in that same list, then Save, and Gmail's tidy print view becomes the file. Open More settings to switch off headers and footers or drop the scale if a line is wrapping badly.

The printer icon at the top of a conversation prints every message in it, replies included, which can run to many pages. For one message only, click that message to expand it, click the three-dot menu on the message itself, and choose Print. Only that message goes to the print view.

Attachments are not included. The printout lists the attachment names but not their contents, so a PDF or an image attached to the email has to be opened and printed on its own. The same is true of inline images blocked by the display setting, which print as empty boxes until you click Display images below in the message.

On the phone. Open the message in the Gmail app, tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the message, and tap Print. Android hands off to its print service, where Save as PDF is one of the destinations, and iPhone uses the standard share and print sheet.
