How to Turn On Dark Mode in Chrome

Chrome has no single dark mode switch. The browser frame follows the operating system by default, newer versions add a mode picker in Settings, and an experimental flag can darken web pages that have no dark theme of their own. Pick the level you want.

Select Dark under Appearance

Click the three-dot menu at the top right, choose Settings, then Appearance. If a Mode option is shown, set it to Dark. Light keeps Chrome light no matter what the system uses, and Device follows the operating system. The change applies right away to the toolbar, tabs, menus, and Chrome's own pages.

Older versions of Chrome only follow the system. On Windows, open Settings, Personalization, Colors, and set Choose your mode to Dark. On a Mac, open System Settings, Appearance, and select Dark. Chrome picks up the change without a restart. Sites that support the system dark mode, such as most news and documentation sites, switch at the same time.

Force dark colors on every web page

Chrome can invert light pages so that nearly every site turns dark. Paste this into the address bar and press Enter:

Set Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents to Enabled and click Relaunch. This is an experimental flag. Some images, maps, charts, and form fields can look wrong, and the flag can disappear in a future update. Set it back to Default and relaunch to undo it.

Install a dark theme for the frame only

If you only want a darker toolbar without touching web pages, go to Settings, Appearance, and click Theme to open the Chrome Web Store. Pick any dark theme and click Add to Chrome. A theme does not change page content, and Reset to default under Appearance removes it.

Sites with their own dark mode. YouTube, Reddit, X, Gmail, and many others have a dark setting in their own menus that is separate from Chrome. They stay light until you change that setting, unless you use the flag above. Some of them offer a device or system option that then follows Chrome's Mode setting.

On a phone. On Android, open the three-dot menu, then Settings, Theme, and choose Dark or System default. On iPhone, Chrome follows the iOS appearance setting under Settings, Display & Brightness.
