How to Turn On Dark Mode on Android

Turn on Dark theme on Android from Settings or the Quick Settings tile, and schedule it to switch on at sunset or at a time you choose.

Android's Dark theme switches the system interface and any app that follows it to dark backgrounds. You will turn it on in Display settings and, if you want, put it on a schedule.

Open Display settings

Open Settings and tap Display.

Turn on Dark theme

Tap the Dark theme toggle. The change applies immediately to Settings, the notification shade, the keyboard, and every app that follows the system theme.

Set a schedule

Tap the Dark theme row itself, not the toggle, and tap Schedule. Choose Turns on from sunset to sunrise to follow local daylight, or Turns on at custom time and set a start and end time. Turns on at bedtime ties it to the Bedtime mode schedule in Digital Wellbeing. None keeps it manual.

Use the Quick Settings tile

Swipe down from the top of the screen twice and tap Dark theme to switch it on or off without opening Settings. If the tile is missing, tap the pencil (edit) icon at the bottom of the panel and drag Dark theme into the active tiles.

On Samsung phones. Go to Settings, Display, and tap Dark. Tap Dark mode settings to turn on Turn on as scheduled and pick Sunset to sunrise or Custom schedule. The Quick Settings tile is called Dark mode.

Apps. Apps only switch if they support the system theme; a few older apps stay light. Chrome has its own setting under its three-dot menu, Settings, Theme, where System default follows the phone and Dark forces it. Some apps, including Gmail and YouTube, have a similar theme setting inside their own settings, so check there if one does not change.
