How to Raise Your Hand on Zoom
Raise your hand in a Zoom meeting from the Reactions menu or with a keyboard shortcut, see where you stand in the queue, and lower it when you are done.
You want to say something in a meeting without talking over anyone. Raising your hand puts a hand icon on your tile and adds you to a list the host can see, in the order hands went up.
Open the Reactions menu
In the meeting toolbar at the bottom of the window, click React (labeled Reactions in some versions). If the toolbar is hidden, move the mouse over the meeting window to bring it back.
Click Raise Hand
Click Raise Hand at the bottom of the menu. Shortcut: Alt + Y (Mac: Option + Y). A hand icon appears on your video tile and next to your name in the participants list, and the host is notified. Your tile also moves toward the front of the gallery on the host's screen.
Wait to be called on
The host sees raised hands at the top of the Participants panel, sorted by who raised first, so there is no need to raise and lower repeatedly to get attention. Stay muted until the host calls on you, then unmute with Alt + A (Mac: Cmd + Shift + A) or by holding Space.
Lower your hand
Click React again and choose Lower Hand, or press Alt + Y (Mac: Option + Y) a second time. The host can also lower it for you after you have spoken, and some hosts lower all hands at once between topics. Your hand stays up until one of these happens, even if you speak.
Hand versus emoji reactions. The same menu holds emoji such as a thumbs up and clapping. Those show on your tile for a few seconds and disappear on their own. The raised hand is different: it stays until it is lowered, which is why it works for a queue. Use an emoji to agree or applaud; use the hand when you need to speak.
On a phone. In the Zoom mobile app, tap More in the bottom right of the toolbar, then Raise Hand. To lower it, tap More again and choose Lower Hand. On a tablet the React button may appear directly in the toolbar. If you dialed in by phone, press *9 to raise or lower your hand.
