How to Prevent Ice Dams

Most fixes sold for ice dams are aimed at the wrong thing. Gutter guards, gutter removal, and heat cable all treat the ice at the eave, but the ice forms because warm air leaking into the attic is melting snow high on the roof. That meltwater runs down to the cold overhang, refreezes, and builds a ridge that traps the next round of water behind it. The work happens inside the attic, in warm weather, and it is done in a specific order.

Air seal the attic floor first

Every hole between the living space and the attic leaks heated air upward. Seal the attic hatch with weatherstripping and a latch, cover or replace recessed light housings that are not rated for contact with insulation, and use canned foam or caulk around plumbing stacks, wiring penetrations, flue chases, and the top plates of interior walls. Sealing is the cheapest step and the one that changes the roof temperature the most.

Vent every fan to the outdoors

Check where each bathroom and kitchen fan actually terminates. Many dump warm, wet air straight into the attic or into a soffit that pulls it back in. Each one needs an insulated duct running to a dedicated roof or wall cap.

Bring the insulation up to current levels

Once the leaks are sealed, add insulation to the depth your climate zone calls for, spread evenly with no gaps around the perimeter. Insulation alone, laid over an unsealed ceiling, does not stop air movement and will not stop the dams.

Confirm the soffit and ridge vents are open

Cold air entering at the soffits and leaving at the ridge keeps the roof deck at outdoor temperature. Look for insulation packed into the eaves blocking the soffit vents, and install baffles to hold a clear channel at every rafter bay.

Treat heat cable as a last resort

Heat cable at the eaves melts a drain path on a roof that cannot be corrected, such as a complex valley or a cathedral ceiling with no attic to work in. It runs up an electric bill all winter, it fails after a few seasons, and it does nothing about the melting higher up. Use it as mitigation, not as the fix.

Find the leaks instead of guessing. A blower door test with an infrared scan shows exactly where warm air is moving on a cold day, and many utilities subsidize the audit.

What does not help. Removing gutters does not prevent an ice dam, because the ice forms on the shingles above them.
