How to Update Your Router Firmware

Router firmware updates fix security holes and connection bugs. Most routers check and install in a few clicks, and the whole thing takes about five minutes.

Log in to your router

Open the admin page in a browser and sign in. See log in to your router.

Find the update section

Look for Firmware Update, Router Update, Software Update, or Update. It is usually under Administration, System, Management, Advanced, or Tools. The page shows the current firmware version.

Check for updates

Click Check for Updates, Check, or Online Update. The router contacts the maker's server and reports whether a newer version exists. If it says the firmware is up to date, there is nothing more to do.

Install the update

Click Update, Upgrade, or Install. The router downloads the file, writes it, and reboots. This takes 2 to 5 minutes, and Wi-Fi drops during it. Do not unplug the router or close the browser until the lights settle and the admin page comes back. Interrupting a firmware write can leave the router unusable.

Turn on automatic updates

Back in the same section, look for an Auto Update or Automatic firmware update toggle and switch it on if offered. The router then installs updates overnight on its own.

If there is no check button. Older routers need the file supplied by hand. Go to the maker's support site, search for the exact model and hardware version printed on the sticker underneath the router, and download the latest firmware file. Back in the update section, click Browse or Choose File, select the file, and click Upload or Upgrade. Use only the file for that exact model and hardware version; the wrong one can brick the router.

If the router came from the internet provider or is a mesh system. Provider-managed gateways update themselves and usually have no button. Mesh systems such as eero, Google Nest Wifi, and TP-Link Deco update automatically through their app, which shows the current version and update status in its settings.
