How to Set Up a Wi-Fi Extender

The extender is plugged in at the far end of the house, right next to the dead spot, and the Wi-Fi there is still bad. An extender does not create signal, it repeats what it receives, so a weak signal going in is a weak signal coming out. Placement does most of the work here.

Plug it in halfway, not at the dead spot

Pick an outlet roughly halfway between the router and the weak area, somewhere the router's signal is still strong. Stand there with a phone first and check that you get two or three bars and a working page load. An outlet at chest height in open air beats one behind furniture or near a fridge.

Pair it with the router

If both the router and the extender have a WPS button, press the router's button, then the extender's within two minutes, and wait for the link light to go solid. If either lacks WPS, join the extender's own setup network, named on its label, and follow the app or the setup page it opens, commonly at 192.168.1.1 or an address printed on the label. You will be asked to pick your home network and enter its password.

Give the extended network the same name and password

Using the same Wi-Fi name, password, and security type as the main network lets phones and laptops hand off between the two without being told. Choose a separate name, such as the main name plus a suffix, only if you want to pick which one a device uses by hand.

Check the signal or link light on the extender, or the strength reading in its app. Green or strong means the spot works. Amber, red, or a weak reading means move it one or two rooms closer to the router and check again. Test the dead spot afterward with a speed test, not just a bar count.

If the extended network is slow even with a strong link. Single-band extenders repeat on the same radio they receive on, which roughly halves throughput. A mesh system, or an Ethernet run to a second access point, keeps full speed in a large house.

If thick walls are the obstacle. Powerline adapters send the signal over the house wiring instead of through the walls, which often beats a repeated radio link.
