How to Use WhatsApp on a Computer
Link WhatsApp Web or the Windows and Mac desktop app to your phone by scanning a QR code, then chat from your computer even when the phone is offline.
WhatsApp runs in a browser or as a desktop app once you link it to the phone that holds your account. The link takes under a minute and keeps working after the phone goes offline.
Open WhatsApp on the computer
In a browser, go to web.whatsapp.com. For the app, install WhatsApp from the Microsoft Store on Windows or from the App Store on Mac, then open it. Either way a QR code appears on screen.
Open Linked devices on your phone
On Android, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, then Linked devices. On iPhone, tap Settings in the bottom right, then Linked devices.
Tap Link a device
Tap Link a device. Unlock with your fingerprint, face, or passcode if the phone asks. The camera opens with a scanning frame.
Scan the QR code
Point the phone at the code on the computer screen. Your chats load within a few seconds; a large history takes longer the first time while messages sync. The computer is now listed under Linked devices with its name and last activity.
Link with a phone number instead (optional)
If the camera cannot read the code, click Link with phone number on the computer and enter your number. An eight-character code appears. On the phone, tap Link a device, then Link with phone number instead, and type the code.
Offline phone. Linked devices keep sending and receiving on their own, so the phone does not need to stay connected. You can link up to four devices at once, and messages remain end-to-end encrypted. The computer cannot be used to broadcast or view live location, and a few settings still live only on the phone.
Logging out. On the computer, open the menu next to your profile and choose Log out. From the phone, go to Linked devices, tap the device, then Log out. A linked device is disconnected automatically if you have not used WhatsApp on the phone for 14 days.
