How to Mute a Group on WhatsApp

A muted group stops buzzing your phone but keeps every message. You can mute for a set time or permanently, and nobody in the group is told.

Open the group and tap its name

Open the group chat, then tap the group name at the top of the screen to reach the group info page.

Tap Mute notifications

On Android, tap Mute notifications in the list of options. On iPhone, tap Mute in the same place. A dialog opens with the duration choices.

Choose a duration

Pick 8 hours, 1 week, or Always, then tap OK (Android) or confirm the choice (iPhone). The mute starts immediately and a crossed-out speaker icon appears next to the group in the chat list.

Turn off Show notifications (optional)

In the same dialog, the Show notifications toggle controls whether muted messages still appear silently in your notification shade. Turn it off if you want nothing at all until you open the chat yourself, including the count on the chat list.

Mute from the chat list instead

On Android, long-press the group in the chat list and tap the crossed-out speaker icon at the top, then choose the duration. On iPhone, swipe left on the group, tap More, then Mute, or long-press the chat and choose Mute. To unmute later, follow the same path and choose Unmute notifications (Android) or Unmute (iPhone).

Nobody is notified. Muting is private. Members see no change, messages keep arriving, and you can still open and reply in the chat whenever you like. Mentions of your name are still delivered silently unless you have set them otherwise in Settings, Notifications.

Hiding the chat. If you also want the group out of your chat list, long-press it on Android and tap the archive icon, or swipe left on iPhone and tap Archive. Archived chats stay muted and sit in the Archived folder at the top of the list.
