How to Keep Your WhatsApp Number When You Change Carriers

You are moving to a new carrier and worried the new SIM will wipe your chats or lock you out of WhatsApp. WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, not to the carrier or the SIM card, so if the number ports over with you nothing changes and there is nothing to re-verify. If the number itself is changing, a built-in tool moves the account to the new number.

Back up your chats

Open WhatsApp and go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup, then tap Back Up Now. On iPhone this goes to iCloud, on Android to Google Drive. Nothing should go wrong, but the backup costs a minute and protects every message if it does.

Confirm the port completed

Put the new SIM in, make a phone call, and send a regular text message. Until both work, the number is still with the old carrier. Ports usually finish within a few hours but can take a day or two.

Open WhatsApp and send a message

Once calls and texts work on the new SIM, open WhatsApp and send any message. It goes through as normal. Do not delete or reinstall the app, and do not log out. The app does not know or care which carrier is behind the number.

Verify by SMS if asked

WhatsApp only asks to verify again if the app was reinstalled or the phone was reset. If that happens, it sends a 6-digit code by text to your number, so the new SIM must be able to receive SMS. Tap the code from the notification or type it in and the account is back with the chats restored from the backup.

Change the number if the number itself is changing

If the new carrier gives you a different number, do this before the old SIM is deactivated, while the app is still registered to the old number. Go to Settings, Account, Change number, tap Next, enter the old number and the new one, then choose whether to notify your contacts. The verification code goes to the new number, so that SIM needs to be able to receive a text. Your chats, groups, and settings carry over.

Keep the old SIM active until the port is confirmed. If the old carrier cancels service before the port finishes, the number can be lost, and with it the account. Leave the old line alone until the new SIM makes calls.

eSIM transfers need nothing either. Moving the same number to an eSIM on the same phone, or to a new phone, is invisible to WhatsApp. Only a reinstall or a new number triggers anything.
