How to Block a Contact on WhatsApp

Block a WhatsApp contact from the chat or from Settings so they cannot message or call you, report spam at the same time, and unblock later.

Blocking stops a person from messaging or calling you and hides your activity from them. It takes a few taps and they are not told.

Open the chat and tap the name

Open the conversation with the person, then tap their name or number at the top of the screen to reach the contact info page.

Scroll down and tap Block

Scroll to the bottom of the contact info page. On Android, tap Block, shown in red. On iPhone, tap Block in the same position. If the number is not in your contacts, the top of the chat also shows Block and Report shortcuts you can use instead.

Confirm, with or without a report

A dialog asks you to confirm. On iPhone, choose Block or Report and Block. On Android, tap Block, or check Report contact first. Reporting sends the last five messages from that person to WhatsApp for review, so use it for spam or abuse.

Block from Settings instead

If there is no open chat, go to Settings, Privacy, then Blocked contacts (Android) or Blocked (iPhone). Tap the add icon on Android or Add New on iPhone, and pick the contact from your list. On Android the Settings screen is under the three-dot menu; on iPhone it is the tab at the bottom right.

Unblock from the same list

Return to the blocked list, tap the person's name, and choose Unblock. On iPhone you can also swipe left on the name and tap Unblock. Messages they sent while blocked are gone; only new messages arrive.

What a blocked person sees. They cannot send you messages or call you, and nothing they send while blocked is delivered later. They cannot see your last seen, online status, status updates, or profile photo changes. WhatsApp does not notify them, though they may guess from the single gray check on their messages.

Groups. Blocking does not affect groups you share. You still see their messages in those groups, and they see yours, until one of you leaves.
