How to Leave a Slack Channel That Keeps Adding You Back

You leave a channel and a day later you are back in it. This happens for a small number of reasons, and each has a different fix.

Check whether it is a default channel

Open the channel and click its name at the top. If Leave channel is greyed out or missing, the channel is a workspace default: admins have set it so every member belongs to it. Default channels cannot be left by anyone, so skip to muting.

Leave the channel again and note who adds you

Click the channel name, then Leave channel. When you are added back, Slack posts a line in the channel saying who added you. If it names a person, they may be doing it by hand. If it names a bot or workflow, an automation is responsible. If it happens right after someone edits a user group, the group is the cause.

Check for a user group

Slack user groups (handles like @design-team) can be set to add all their members to specific channels automatically. Open People from the sidebar (under More if it is hidden) and switch to the user groups view to see which groups you belong to and which default channels each one lists.

Mute the channel so it stays silent

If you cannot leave, click the channel name, then Mute channel. Also click Change notifications and choose Nothing. A muted channel shows no badges, sends no notifications, and drops to the bottom of its sidebar section. You can still open it when you want.

Ask an admin to remove the source

Send a workspace admin or the group owner one of these requests: remove you from the user group, take the channel off the default list, or edit the workflow that adds members. Only they can change those settings. Once the source is gone, leave the channel one more time and it will stay left.

If the channel is #general. It cannot be left by design; every member of the workspace stays in it. Muting still works and keeps it quiet.

If a person keeps adding you. Ask them directly to stop. There is no setting that blocks another member from adding you to a public channel.
