A channel got a new name and the file someone posted under the old name seems to have gone with it. Renaming a Slack channel changes nothing except the name; every message and file stays in place, so the file is still there under the new name. Search by whatever detail you remember and it turns up.
Search inside the renamed channel
In the search bar, type in:#new-name followed by a word from the file name or the message it came with, then press Enter. Slack searches the channel's full history, including everything posted before the rename.
Switch to the Files tab
If the results are mostly messages, click the Files tab at the top of the search results. This shows only files matching the search, with a preview and the channel each one was posted in.
Narrow by sender or file type
Add from:@username to limit results to one person. In the Files tab, use the filters at the top to narrow by file type (PDF, image, spreadsheet) and by who shared it. Combining the channel, the sender, and a type usually leaves a short list.
Browse the channel's Files list
Open the channel, click the channel name at the top to open its details, then the Files tab. This lists every file shared in the channel, newest first, with no search needed.
Try the old name in the channel switcher
If only the old name comes to mind, press Ctrl + K (Cmd + K on a Mac), type the old name, and pick the result. Slack often redirects old names to the renamed channel, which tells you the new name to search in.
Check archived channels
Search results include archived channels by default, so a file in an archived channel still appears. To browse instead, open the channel browser from the sidebar (More, Channels) and switch the filter to archived channels.
If you left the channel. Files shared in a public channel remain searchable whether or not you are still a member. Files in a private channel only appear for current members, so ask someone in it to share the file again.
If the file was deleted. Deleted files do not come back through search. On some paid plans a workspace admin may be able to recover it, so ask an admin rather than the person who posted it.
