How to Stop Netflix from Playing the Next Episode on a TV

current Netflix apps; account settings at netflix.com noted · Last checked · Suggest an edit

Every episode on the TV rolls straight into the next one, and nothing in the TV app's menus turns it off. Autoplay is not a TV setting; it is a per-profile setting stored on the Netflix account, and the only place to change it is the Netflix website. Once it is off for the profile, every device using that profile stops autoplaying.

Open the account page in a browser

On a phone or computer, go to netflix.com/account and sign in. The TV app cannot show this page.

Choose the profile

Scroll to Profiles (older layouts call it Profile & Parental Controls) and click the profile the TV uses. Each profile has its own autoplay setting, so pick the right one.

Change the playback settings

Click Playback settings, then Change. Untick Autoplay next episode in a series on all devices. If the trailers that start while browsing are also unwanted, untick Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices. Click Save.

Reload the TV app

The TV app picks up the setting when it signs in, so sign out of Netflix on the TV and sign back in, or leave the app fully closed for a few minutes and reopen it. The next-episode countdown no longer appears at the end of an episode.

Repeat for other profiles

If the TV is shared, go back to the account page and make the same playback change for every profile that should stop autoplaying. There is no account-wide switch.

If the countdown still shows. Some TV apps keep the old setting cached until the app is force closed or the TV is restarted. Restart the TV, then sign out and in again, and the change takes.

If you still want to keep watching. Turning off autoplay only removes the automatic countdown. The episode list and the Next Episode button remain, so the next one is a single press away.
