How to Turn Off Location for a Specific App on iPhone

An app that has no business knowing where you are keeps asking, or you have noticed the location arrow in the status bar while using it. You can cut off location for that one app and leave everything else, including Maps and Find My, untouched.

Open Location Services

Open Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services. Leave the Location Services toggle at the top on, and scroll down to the alphabetical list of apps below it.

Tap the app

Find the app and tap it. The gray text under each app name shows its current permission, and a small arrow next to it means the app has used your location recently.

Choose Never

Tap Never. The other choices are Ask Next Time Or When I Share, which blocks access until the app asks again, While Using the App, which allows it only while the app is open on screen, and, for some apps, Always. The change takes effect immediately, with no restart needed. The app may show a message asking you to enable location; it can be dismissed.

Turn off Precise Location if you would rather keep approximate access

If you want the app to keep working with a rough location (a weather app needs the city, not your street), leave it on While Using the App and turn off the Precise Location toggle underneath. The app then receives a general area instead of your exact position. Apps that do not need turn-by-turn directions work fine this way.

The top toggle turns off everything. The Location Services switch at the top of the screen disables location for every app and system service at once, including Find My, Maps navigation, and location tags on new photos. Leave it on and manage apps one by one. If you do turn it off, Find My cannot report the phone's position if it is lost.

A shortcut from the app's own settings. On iOS 18 and later, open Settings, Apps, tap the app, then Location to reach the same choices. On iOS 17 and earlier, apps are listed directly in Settings, so open Settings, tap the app, then Location. Apps that have never asked for location do not show the option at all.
