How to Export a Text Message Thread from an iPhone

iOS has no export button for Messages. The closest built-in options are screenshots, the Mac Messages app, and forwarding. Pick the method that matches how much you need and what you need it for.

Take screenshots for a short thread

Open the conversation in Messages and take a screenshot of each screen (press Side and Volume Up together, or Side and Home on older models). For a longer thread, scroll and repeat. The Full Page screenshot option only works in Safari and a few document apps, not in Messages, so each screen is a separate image.

Turn on Messages in iCloud

On the iPhone, go to Settings, your name, iCloud, Messages in iCloud (labeled Show All first if it is hidden) and turn on Use on this iPhone. On a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, open System Settings, Apple Account, iCloud, Messages and turn it on. The full thread appears in the Mac Messages app after it syncs.

Save the thread as a PDF on the Mac

In the Mac Messages app, select the conversation, scroll up until the messages you need are loaded, then choose File, Print and pick Save as PDF from the PDF menu at the bottom left. If you only need the words, click in the conversation, press Command-A, then Command-C, and paste into a Pages, Word, or Notes document.

Forward individual messages to an email address

On the iPhone, touch and hold a message, tap More, tick each message you want, then tap the forward arrow at the bottom right. Type your own email address in the To field and send. Each forward becomes one email, so this suits a handful of messages, not hundreds.

Use a backup extractor for a complete record

Third-party iPhone backup extractors for Mac and Windows read a local Finder or iTunes backup and export a whole conversation to PDF, CSV, or HTML with timestamps. They are paid tools and the only route that produces a full dated transcript. Make the backup first in Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app (Windows), then point the extractor at it.

If you only do one thing. Turn on Messages in iCloud. It is what makes the Mac method work, and it keeps the thread available even after the phone is replaced.

If this is for a dispute or legal matter. Keep the original messages on the phone. Screenshots are not always accepted as records, and the device itself may be needed to verify them.
