How to Delete Your Instagram Account Permanently

current Instagram app; settings that live in Accounts Center noted · Last checked · Suggest an edit

Deleting an Instagram account is permanent once a 30-day waiting period ends. Deactivating only hides the account until you log back in, so choose delete only if you are sure you will not want it back.

Download your data first

Once the account is gone, photos, videos, messages, and followers cannot be recovered. In the app, go to your profile, tap the menu icon at the top right, then tap Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, Download your information. Choose the account, pick a format and date range, and submit the request. Instagram emails a download link, which can take a few days for large accounts. Wait for that file before continuing.

Open Deactivation or deletion

Go to your profile, tap the menu icon, then tap Settings and activity, Accounts Center, Personal details, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion.

Choose the account and select Delete account

Tap the Instagram account you want to remove. If several profiles share the same Accounts Center, check the username carefully. Select Delete account, then tap Continue.

Give a reason and enter your password

Pick a reason from the list. Instagram may suggest alternatives such as deactivating instead; scroll past them. Enter your password and tap Delete. The account disappears from Instagram right away.

Stay logged out for 30 days

During this time the account is only hidden. Logging in on any device cancels the deletion and restores everything. After 30 days the deletion becomes final: photos, videos, comments, likes, followers, the following list, and direct messages are removed. The username is released, but Instagram does not guarantee that you or anyone else can claim it again. Instagram says it can take up to 90 days after the request to remove everything from its systems, and copies that other people saved or shared stay with them.

If you would rather use a computer. The same steps work at instagram.com. Click More, Settings, Accounts Center, then Personal details, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion.

If you have a Threads profile. Threads is tied to the Instagram account, so deleting the Instagram account deletes the Threads profile with it. Deactivating Instagram deactivates Threads as well.
