How to Remove an Old Smart TV from Google Home or Alexa

A TV you sold, gave away, or replaced can stay listed in Google Home or Alexa and keep catching voice commands meant for the new one. These steps remove it from both apps and cut its link to your accounts.

Remove the TV from the Google Home app

Open the Google Home app, tap Devices, and tap the TV. Tap the gear at the top right to open its settings, scroll to the bottom, and tap Remove device, then confirm. If the TV still appears afterward, pull down to refresh the Devices tab. A TV linked through the maker's account only disappears after the next step.

Unlink the TV brand from Works with Google Home

If the TV was added through its maker's account rather than Chromecast built-in, removing the device alone will not stick. In the Google Home app, tap Settings, Works with Google Home, tap the brand, and tap Unlink account. Link it again afterward only if other devices from that brand should stay.

Remove the TV from the Alexa app

Open the Alexa app, tap Devices, tap All Devices or the TV category, and tap the TV. Tap the gear at the top right, then the trash icon, and confirm. If it comes back, the brand's skill is re-adding it: tap More, Skills & Games, Your Skills, tap the brand, and tap Disable Skill.

Unlink and deregister a Fire TV

For a Fire TV or a TV running Fire TV software, open the Alexa app, tap More, Settings, TV & Video, Fire TV, choose the TV, and tap Unlink. Then go to amazon.com, open Account & Lists, Manage Your Content and Devices, click Devices, select the TV, and click Deregister. That removes it from your Amazon account entirely.

Sign the TV out of your Google Account

If the TV runs Google TV or Android TV and you still have it, factory reset it before it leaves. If it is already gone, go to myaccount.google.com, click Security, scroll to Your devices, click Manage all devices, select the TV, and click Sign out.

If other accounts are still on the TV. A TV you no longer own may still be signed in to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and similar services. Sign it out from each service's website under its devices or manage access page, and change the password where sign-out is not offered.
