How to register to vote before your state's deadline

The midterm election is November 3, 2026, and in most states registration closes weeks earlier, some as early as the first days of October. The wrong assumption is that you can sort it out at the polling place: fewer than half the states allow Election Day registration, and a move or a name change can leave you off the rolls without warning.

Check whether you are already registered

Open Can I Vote, the National Association of Secretaries of State lookup, and choose Voter Registration Status. Pick your state and it sends you to the state's own lookup, where you enter your name and date of birth or license number. A record with an old address or a former name can be treated as inactive.

Find your state's deadline

Go to vote.gov, select your state or territory, and note the registration deadline shown for the general election. Every state except North Dakota requires registration, and federal law caps the cutoff at 30 days before a federal election, so the earliest deadlines fall around October 4 to 6. As of September 2026, Texas closes registration on October 5 and Pennsylvania on October 19. The NCSL deadline table lists all states, including the nineteen states plus DC with Election Day registration and the two, Montana and North Carolina, that allow it only during early voting.

Register online or in person through your state

Back on Can I Vote, choose Register To Vote and pick your state. Most states offer an online form that needs a driver's license or state ID number. In person, your DMV, county clerk, or local election office can register you on the spot, which is the safest route in the final week because no postmark is involved.

Use the national mail form if online is not an option

Download the National Mail Voter Registration Form from the Election Assistance Commission. Fill out the application boxes, then read your state's page in the same booklet for the mailing address and any oath. Sign it, put it in an envelope with full postage, and mail it to the address listed for your state, or hand it to your local election office. New Hampshire and Wisconsin accept the form only as a request for their own form, Wyoming does not allow mail registration, and North Dakota has no registration. If you are registering by mail for the first time in a jurisdiction, include a copy of a photo ID or a current utility bill or bank statement showing your name and address, never the originals.

Update your registration after a move or name change

Follow the usa.gov update page. A move within the state or a new name is an update through your state's system, using the same online or mail routes as a new registration, and it faces the same deadline. A move to another state is a new registration there.

Request a mail ballot if you will be away

If you will be out of town, in the hospital, or at school elsewhere, choose Absentee and Early Voting on Can I Vote to reach your state's ballot request page, and read the usa.gov absentee page for what counts as an excuse in the states that still require one. Note two dates: the last day to request the ballot and the day it must be back, and whether that return date means postmarked or received.

If that fails. Choose Local Officials Directory on Can I Vote and call your county or town election office. They can confirm your status by phone, give the exact cutoff, and take an in person registration up to the deadline.

If you are not sure the form arrived. Check your status again two weeks after mailing. If it still shows nothing a week before the deadline, register in person with proof of address.
