How to File the CSS Profile Before Your First College Deadline

United States; College Board CSS Profile for the 2027-28 award year, fees and rules as published in October 2026 · Last checked · Suggest an edit

The FAFSA is done, so the aid file feels finished. It is not, at a few hundred colleges. They hand out their own grant money using a second form, the College Board CSS Profile, and a Profile that arrives after their priority date can cost a family that school's institutional aid. The College Board says students can start submitting on October 1 for the following school year, and the 2027-28 form is open now.

Check which of your colleges want it

Open the College Board 2027-28 participating institutions list. For each school, note three columns: whether domestic students must file, whether a noncustodial parent must file too, and whether the school uses IDOC. The list has no deadlines, so take each priority date from the college's own financial aid page and write down the earliest one.

Gather the records before you sign in

The CSS Profile getting started page lists the most recently completed tax returns, W-2 forms and other records of current year income, records of untaxed income and benefits, assets, and bank statements. Have them for the student and every parent who files.

Sign in with the student account and fill it out

Go to the CSS Profile site and sign in under Fall 2027/Spring 2028 with the student's College Board account, the same one used for the SAT, PSAT, or AP. The step by step guide says custodial parents use that same account. Add each school with Add a College or Program; more can be added later.

Pay, or let the waiver apply

As of October 2026, the fee waiver page says domestic undergraduates file free if family adjusted gross income is up to $100,000, if they qualified for an SAT fee waiver, or if they are an orphan or ward of the court under 24. Otherwise the first school costs $25 and each additional report $16, paid by credit or debit card. Submit by midnight Eastern Time of the earliest priority date.

Upload anything IDOC asks for

The IDOC page says the College Board emails you if a school needs documents. Sign in, upload tax returns, W-2 forms, and the forms listed on the dashboard for the student and all parents, by midnight Eastern Time of the earliest deadline shown there.

If a parent lives elsewhere. The divorced or separated parents page says a noncustodial parent creates a separate College Board account in their own name and files their own section. The same page links a waiver request form for schools that allow one.

If you made a mistake. Use Correct Your CSS Profile on the dashboard after submitting. The federal form is a separate filing; see how to fill out the FAFSA.
