Mail you were waiting for turns up under Promotions or Updates days later, because Gmail sorted it there instead of into the inbox. The tabs are not filters you have to keep, they are an inbox layout, and switching them off puts every message back in one list.
Open the inbox settings
In Gmail on the web, click Settings (gear icon) at the top right, then See all settings, then the Inbox tab. The quick settings panel also has a Customize link directly under Inbox type, which jumps to the same place.
Untick every category
Set Inbox type to Default. Under Categories, Primary is fixed and cannot be unticked. Clear the boxes for Promotions, Social, Updates, and Forums. With only Primary left, the tab strip disappears and new mail lands in a single list.
Click Save Changes
Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes. The inbox reloads without tabs. Mail that was already sorted stays in the category it was given until you move it, so drag anything you still want in the inbox back to Primary.
Switch to an inbox type with no tabs
For a layout that cannot use tabs at all, set Inbox type to Important first, Unread first, Starred first, or Priority Inbox. None of those offer categories, so the tab strip never returns.
Turn tabs off in the app
Tap the three-line menu, then Settings, then the account. Tap Inbox type and choose Default, then open Inbox categories and untick the ones you do not want. The app and the web share the setting, so changing it in one place changes both.
Expect a fuller inbox. Unticking Promotions does not stop that mail arriving, it just delivers it to Primary alongside everything else. Newsletters and receipts that were quietly stacking up out of sight now compete with real messages, so unsubscribing or building a filter is worth doing at the same time.
Gmail still categorizes underneath. Messages keep their category label even with the tabs hidden, which means searches like category:promotions and filters that act on a category carry on working.
