How to Recover a Google Account You Have Not Used in Years

You have an old Gmail address, you do not remember the password, and the phone number on file may be gone. Google's recovery flow can still get you in if you give it enough matching evidence.

Use a familiar device and connection

Before starting, pick up a phone or laptop that was signed in to the account before, and connect to the Wi-Fi you used at the time, such as home. Google weighs device and location history heavily, and the same steps from a new laptop in a coffee shop often fail.

Open the recovery page

Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery, enter the address, and click Next. If you are not sure of the address, click Forgot email on the regular sign-in page and enter a recovery phone or email instead.

Enter the last password you remember

Type the most recent password you can recall, even if you think it is wrong. A close or outdated password still counts as evidence. If nothing comes to mind, click Try another way.

Get a code from the recovery phone or email

Google offers to text a code to the recovery phone number or send one to the recovery email on file. If you still have either, enter the code and you are in. If the recovery phone is gone, Google may instead send a prompt or code to the account's own phone if that phone is still signed in anywhere.

Each option you cannot use leads to the next. Older accounts sometimes still reach a security question. The last option is a verification delay: Google sends a message to a contact email you provide, then waits, sometimes several days, before allowing a password reset. Answer every question with your best guess rather than skipping it.

Set a new password and update recovery info

Once in, Google asks for a new password. Then open Manage your Google Account, Security, and add a current recovery phone and recovery email under How you sign in to Google. Sign in at least once every two years so the account stays active.

If the account has been inactive for two years or more. Google's inactive account policy, in effect since December 2023, deletes personal accounts that have not been used for two years. A deleted account cannot be recovered by anyone, and the address cannot be reused. If the recovery page says the account does not exist, that is likely what happened.

If Google says it cannot verify it is you. Wait a day and try again from the familiar device. Repeated attempts from different devices in a short window lower the odds.
