How to Make Gmail Show the Unsubscribe Button

Gmail shows an Unsubscribe link next to the sender's name at the top of an email, but only when the sender includes a standard unsubscribe header in the message. When the link is missing, the sender left that header out, and there is no setting that forces it to appear. Here is where to look instead.

Look next to the sender's name

Open the email. If Gmail found an unsubscribe header, Unsubscribe appears in small text to the right of the sender's name and address near the top of the message. Click it and confirm. Gmail either sends the request on your behalf or opens the sender's unsubscribe page in a new tab.

Scroll to the bottom of the email

When the link is missing, most legitimate newsletters still include an unsubscribe link in the footer. Scroll to the end and look for "unsubscribe" or "manage preferences", usually in small gray text below the signature.

Use the Manage subscriptions page

In the left sidebar, click More, then Manage subscriptions. Gmail lists the senders that mail you most often, with a count of recent messages from each. Click Unsubscribe next to any sender to opt out without opening a single email. The same page is in the Gmail app: tap the menu icon in the top left, then Manage subscriptions.

Block or filter senders that offer no way out

Open a message, click the three-dot menu next to the reply button, and choose Block. Future mail from that address goes to Spam. To delete it silently instead, click the three-dot menu, choose Filter messages like this, click Create filter, check Delete it, and click Create filter again.

If Gmail suggests it. Gmail sometimes shows a blue Unsubscribe prompt at the top of an inbox message from a sender whose mail you never open. Clicking it does the same thing as the link next to the sender's name.

If you never signed up. Do not click unsubscribe links in spam you never subscribed to. That can confirm your address is active and bring more spam. Block or report those senders instead.
