How to Find Archived Emails in Gmail
Locate emails you archived in Gmail using the All Mail view or the -in:inbox search, then move any of them back to your inbox with one click.
Archiving removes an email from the inbox without deleting it. Archived mail sits in All Mail, and you can pull it back into the inbox at any time.
Open All Mail
In the left sidebar, click More, then All Mail. This view lists every email in the account except Spam and Trash, including everything you have archived. Archived messages are the ones with no Inbox label shown next to the subject line.
Search for archived mail only
Type -in:inbox in the search box at the top and press Enter. The minus sign excludes anything still in the inbox, so the results are archived mail along with sent messages and drafts. Add -in:sent -in:drafts to leave archived mail on its own, or narrow it with a sender or keyword, for example -in:inbox from:bank.
Search by what you remember
If you know the sender, subject, or rough date, search for it directly. Archived mail matches normal searches the same way inbox mail does, so from:, subject:, has:attachment, and before:2025/01/01 all work without any extra operator. Search results show a gray Inbox label on the messages that are still in the inbox, and nothing on the ones that were archived.
Move an email back to the inbox
Open the email, or check the box next to it in the list, then click Move to Inbox in the toolbar above the messages. To restore several at once, check each one first, or click the checkbox at the top left of the list to select the whole page, then click Move to Inbox.
Stop archiving by accident
If mail keeps disappearing from the inbox, check whether a filter is doing it. Click Settings (gear icon), See all settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses, and look for filters that include Skip the Inbox (Archive it). Edit or delete any you do not want.
Search everywhere. in:anywhere includes Spam and Trash as well, which normal searches skip. If an email is missing from All Mail, check Spam and Trash before assuming it was archived. Trash empties itself after 30 days.
In the Gmail app. Tap the menu icon at the top left, then All mail. To restore an email, open it, tap the three-dot menu, then Move to Inbox.
