How to Filter Every Email from a Newsletter Sender at Once

Gmail on the web; app differences noted · Last checked · Suggest an edit

A newsletter keeps arriving from slightly different addresses, so a filter on one address misses half of it. Filtering on the domain catches all of them, including the ones already in your inbox.

Search by the sender's domain

In the Gmail search box, type from:@example.com (or from:example.com) and press Enter. The results show every message from any address at that domain, which is the set the filter will act on. Check that nothing you want to keep is mixed in.

Combine domains if the sender uses more than one

Some senders mail from a main domain and a separate sending domain. Search from:(@example.com OR @example-mail.com) to cover both. Open a message and click Show original to see the actual sending address if it is not obvious.

Click the sliders icon at the right of the search box. The From field already holds your search. Click Create filter.

Choose what happens to the mail

Tick Skip the Inbox (Archive it) and Apply the label, then pick or create a label such as Newsletters. To remove the mail entirely, tick Delete it instead. Tick Also apply filter to matching conversations so the messages already in your inbox are handled too, then click Create filter.

Use the list ID for mailing lists that share one

Some senders share a domain with a company's normal mail. Open one newsletter, click the three-dot menu, choose Show original, and find the List-ID header. Search list:that-value and build the filter from it instead. Only the mailing list is matched, and personal mail from the same company stays in the inbox.

If the sender is legitimate. Unsubscribe first. Gmail's Manage subscriptions page (in the left menu) lists senders you receive bulk mail from and offers one-click unsubscribe for each, which stops the mail at the source rather than hiding it.

If you chose Delete it. That filter bypasses the inbox forever and future mail from the domain goes straight to Trash, where it is removed after 30 days. Start with a label and Skip the Inbox until you are sure nothing important comes from that domain, then change the filter later under Settings, See all settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses.
