How to Claim a Refund on a Recalled Product

Somebody forwarded you the news, and the product is still in the kitchen or the nursery. The assumption that costs people money is that a recall arrives like a letter, when most companies have no record of who owns the item and the remedy sits unclaimed until the owner asks for it. Every federal recall is published in one place and each notice names a company to contact.

Find the notice for the item you own

The Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes every recall on its recalls page, newest first, with the hazard, the number of units, and the remedy. If you know the brand, the search by company tool filters the list down to one manufacturer.

Match your item against the description before you file

A notice describes the covered product closely: colors, sizes, model numbers, the label wording, and the dates and stores where it sold. The notice for Ricky Joy Sour Crush candy bottles, recall number 26-748 of September 10, 2026, covers about 2.3 million bottles sold from January 2023 through May 2026 and names four flavors and the wording on the front label. Read that section against the item in your hand, because a near identical product from the same brand is often outside the recall.

Stop using it and pick your remedy

CPSC's recall questions and answers says to stop using a recalled product immediately and take part in the recall, and that the company must offer a choice of a free repair, a free replacement, or a full refund including postage, as of September 2026. The same page says the product can be returned without a receipt, so a missing proof of purchase is not a reason to skip the claim.

File the claim the way the notice tells you to

Each notice ends with the company's phone number, its hours, and its recall page. Follow those instructions rather than walking into the store: the Ricky Joy notice sends the owner to the company for a refund and a prepaid shipping label, and other recalls ask for a photograph of the destroyed product instead of a return. Keep the claim reference number you are given.

Register the products that come with a card

The CPSC registration forms guidance covers 28 categories of durable infant and toddler products, including cribs, strollers, high chairs and play yards. Each must carry an attached registration form plus an online or email option, and the maker may use those contact details only to send safety alerts and recalls, not marketing. Registering is what turns the next recall into a message addressed to you.

Report a product that is not on the list

Damage from a product with no published recall goes to SaferProducts.gov, the CPSC reporting site, where you can also search reports other people have filed. CPSC staff review each report.

If you were going to sell or donate it. The CPSC guide for online sellers says it is illegal to sell any recalled product and that the reseller is responsible for checking first. That applies to a yard sale or a marketplace listing, not only to a store.

If the company stops answering. The CPSC hotline on the recall search page is 800-638-2772, and a report through SaferProducts.gov puts the failure to honor a remedy on the record.
