How to Zoom In and Out in Chrome

Text on a page is too small to read comfortably, or a site has suddenly gone enormous. Zoom in Chrome is per site, not global, which is why one page stays huge while every other page looks normal. The shortcuts below change the current site, and the settings below change the default for all of them.

Use the zoom shortcuts

Press Ctrl + plus to zoom in and Ctrl + minus to zoom out (Mac: Cmd + plus and Cmd + minus). Press Ctrl + 0 (Mac: Cmd + 0) to reset the page to 100 percent.

Zoom with the mouse wheel

Hold Ctrl (Mac: Cmd) and scroll the mouse wheel up to zoom in or down to zoom out. This is the fastest way to land on a level between the fixed steps.

Check the level in the address bar

Once a page is zoomed, a magnifier icon appears at the right of the address bar showing the current percentage. Click it to see the level, adjust it, or choose Reset to return to 100 percent.

Set a default zoom for every site

Go to Settings, Appearance, and set Page zoom to the level you want new sites to open at. On the same screen, Font size changes text only and leaves images and layout alone, which suits most reading problems better than zoom does.

Clear the zoom levels Chrome remembered

Chrome saves a zoom level per site automatically. To see and remove them, go to Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, Additional content settings, Zoom levels, and remove any entry you no longer want.

A page that suddenly looks huge or tiny. This is almost always an accidental Ctrl and scroll while your hand was on the wheel. Press Ctrl + 0 (Mac: Cmd + 0) on that page and it returns to normal.

On a phone. There is no zoom shortcut. Open the Chrome app, tap the three-dot menu, Settings, Accessibility, and drag the Default zoom slider. Turn on Force enable zoom to pinch on sites that try to block it.
