How to Remove an Extension from Chrome

Extensions run inside every page you open, so an extension you no longer use is worth removing rather than leaving switched on. Removing one takes two clicks and does not affect your bookmarks, passwords, or history.

Open the Extensions page

Click the three-dot menu at the top right, then choose Extensions, Manage Extensions. Or paste this into the address bar and press Enter:

Every installed extension appears as a card with a toggle, a Details button, and a Remove button.

Click Remove and confirm

Find the extension's card and click Remove. A box asks you to confirm; click Remove again. The extension and its stored data are deleted right away, and its icon disappears from the toolbar. Some extensions open a survey page afterward, which you can close.

Remove it from the toolbar instead

If the extension has an icon next to the address bar, right-click the icon and choose Remove from Chrome, then confirm. If the icon is not pinned, click the puzzle-piece Extensions button first, then click the three-dot icon next to the extension's name and choose Remove from Chrome.

Turn it off first if you are not sure

To test whether an extension is causing a problem without losing its settings, click the toggle on its card so it turns gray, then reload the page you were having trouble with. If the problem goes away, remove the extension. If not, turn the toggle back on. A disabled extension keeps its data and settings.

Look up the policy if there is no Remove button

An extension marked Managed by your organization was installed by a policy and cannot be removed from the Extensions page. Paste this into the address bar to see the policy responsible:

On a work or school computer, ask the administrator. On a personal computer, an entry under ExtensionInstallForcelist that you did not create points to leftover software or malware. Remove the program that set it, then run Safety Check under Settings, Privacy and security.

On a phone. The Chrome app on Android and iPhone does not run extensions, so there is nothing to remove there. If an extension seems to follow you between computers, that is sync: removing it on one signed-in computer removes it on the others.
