How to Export Bookmarks from Chrome

You want a copy of your bookmarks outside Chrome, to move them to another browser, another computer, or just to have a backup. Chrome writes them all to a single HTML file.

Open the Bookmark manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + O (Mac: Cmd + Option + B). You can also click the three-dot menu at the top right, then Bookmarks and lists, then Bookmark manager, or paste:

The Bookmark manager has its own three-dot button at the top right of the page, to the right of the search box. This is a different menu from the browser's main one. Click it.

Click Export bookmarks

Choose Export bookmarks. A save dialog opens with a file name that starts with bookmarks_ followed by the date. Pick a folder and click Save. Every bookmark and folder, including the bookmarks bar and Other bookmarks, goes into that one file.

The file is standard HTML. Open it in any browser and you get a clickable list, which is useful on its own if you just need to find a link.

Import the file elsewhere

On the other computer or browser, open the same menu and choose Import bookmarks, then pick the HTML file. If the bookmarks bar already has items, Chrome places the imported set in a folder named Imported so it does not mix with what is there. Firefox, Edge, Safari, and Brave all accept the same HTML format through their own import tools.

Sync does this automatically. If you sign in to Chrome with a Google account and turn on sync, bookmarks already appear on every device where you sign in. The HTML export is still worth keeping, because sync mirrors deletions too, and a mirror is not a backup.
