How to Find Cheaper Diesel When the US Average Tops $6

The AAA national average for diesel passed $6.05 a gallon on September 11, 2026, up from $3.71 a year ago. The pump price is not the same everywhere, though. On the same day Oklahoma averaged $5.60 and California $7.98, and the spread between two stations a few miles apart is often larger than the week's rise. The steps below find the low station and cut what you burn.

Check your state average before you drive

Open the AAA state gas price averages page and read the Diesel column for your state and any state you will cross. That page updates daily. The Energy Information Administration publishes its own weekly on-highway diesel average on Tuesday around 10 a.m. Eastern, based on Monday morning pump prices, so use it to see the direction of the week rather than today's price. The EIA figure for the week of September 7 rose $0.37 in one week, so a station that has not repriced since Monday is a bargain until the truck arrives.

Set your price app to diesel and sort by price

GasBuddy lists diesel as a supported fuel type and lets you search by fuel type and sort by price or distance. Set the fuel type to diesel first. The default view shows regular gasoline, and a station that is cheapest on regular is often not cheapest on diesel. Sort by price, then check the time stamp on the report; a price posted this morning is worth more than one from three days ago.

Fill on the cheaper side of a state line

Diesel tax is $0.244 a gallon federal plus a state tax that averaged $0.355 in January 2026 and varies by more than $0.60 between states. On September 11, Pennsylvania averaged $6.21 while Ohio was $6.02, and New Mexico was $5.99 while Texas was $5.67. If your route crosses a line, plan the fill for the cheaper state and top off there.

Buy dyed diesel only for equipment that never touches a road

Off-road diesel is dyed red and sold without the highway tax to farms, for heating, and to other tax-exempt users. The pump carries a notice that reads dyed diesel, nontaxable use only. The IRS penalty for running it in a vehicle on a public road is the greater of $1,000 or $10 per gallon, and it rises for a repeat violation. A farm truck that also drives on the highway has to run clear diesel.

Burn fewer gallons per mile

The Department of Energy's fuel economy figures apply to diesel as well as gasoline. Each 5 mph over 50 mph costs about as much as paying an extra $0.29 a gallon. Idling uses a quarter to a half gallon an hour, so shut off the engine at a stop longer than a minute. Every extra 100 pounds of cargo costs about 1 percent, and a roof box costs 6 to 17 percent at highway speed.

If the app shows no diesel prices near you. Reports come from other users, and rural stations get few. Check the AAA metro or county average for the area instead and call the station before driving out of your way.

If a station shows two diesel prices. Many stations post a lower price for cash or a PIN debit card and a higher one for credit. The app usually reports the cash price. Read the pump before you swipe.
