How to Check Which Google Account Google Photos Is Backing Up To

Android 14 to 16 on Pixel; Samsung One UI differences noted · Last checked · Suggest an edit

Google Photos backs up to one account at a time, and a phone with several Google accounts signed in can quietly back up to the wrong one. The app shows which account is active and which one backup uses.

Tap your profile picture in Google Photos

Open Google Photos and tap the profile picture or initial at the top right. The sheet that opens shows the active account's name and email, plus a backup status line such as Backup complete, Backing up, or Backup is off. That status belongs to the account shown.

Open Backup settings

From the same sheet, tap Photos settings, Backup. The Backup account line near the top names the account that receives new photos. Below it, the storage line shows how much of that account's Google One quota is used.

Check the other accounts

Tap the profile picture again, then tap another account in the list to switch to it. Open Photos settings, Backup there as well. Only one account normally shows Backup turned on; the rest show it off. If two accounts both show Backup on, photos are being split, because each account backs up only while it is the active one.

Set the account you want

Switch to the account that should hold the photos, open Photos settings, Backup, and turn Backup on. Switch to any other account and turn Backup off. New photos now go to one place.

Find photos that went to the wrong account

Switch to the other account inside Google Photos and look for the missing photos. To move a handful, select them, tap Share, and choose your other account's email as the recipient; open the shared items from that account and tap Save. To move a whole library, download it at takeout.google.com and upload it while signed in to the correct account.

If you are on iPhone. The same menu applies. Tap the profile picture, then Photos settings, Backup. Backup account and storage are shown in the same place.

If the phone is shared. A family phone with two accounts can end up with half the camera roll in each. Storage is counted per account, so check Photos settings, Backup on both to see where the space is being used.
