How to Block Spam Calls on Android

The Google Phone app can label suspected spam and send it straight to voicemail without ringing. You will turn on those filters, then block any number that still gets through.

Open the Phone app settings

Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and tap Settings.

Tap Caller ID & spam

Tap Caller ID & spam.

Turn on both toggles

Turn on See caller and spam ID so incoming calls show a business name or a Suspected spam label. Then turn on Filter spam calls. Calls Google identifies as spam are sent to voicemail without ringing and appear in your call history marked as spam, so you can still check them.

Block hidden numbers

Go back to Settings and tap Blocked numbers. Turn on Unknown to reject calls from private or withheld numbers. On Pixel phones, Settings, Call Screen can also answer unknown callers automatically and ask who is calling before the phone rings.

Block a number from Recents

Tap Recents, tap the call, and tap History or the three-dot menu. Tap Block / report spam, leave Report call as spam checked if it was spam, and tap Block. The number goes to the Blocked numbers list, where it can be removed later.

On Samsung phones. Open Phone, tap the three-dot menu, tap Settings, and tap Caller ID and spam protection; turn it on to use Smart Call, which labels and can block suspected spam. To block a number, open Recents, tap the call, tap the i details icon, and tap Block. Block numbers in the same Settings menu holds the list and the switch for blocking unknown or private numbers.

Carrier filters. Most carriers offer their own spam blocking, either as a free setting in the carrier's app or as a separate call protection app. Those filters act on the network before the call reaches the phone and work alongside the Phone app settings above.
